Halloween

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints.

而萬聖之日(All Hollows Days或稱All Saints Day)是11月1日,這天是天主教用來紀念聖潔之人的日子.

But the Halloween costumes and traditions were really brought by the Celts in Ireland. Around the 5th century BC, summer officially ended on October 31 in Celtic Ireland,so November 1 became their New Year; they called this holiday Samhain (sow-en) since it was a day that the season of the sun was over, and season of darkness and cold started.

The Celts believed the Lord of Death ruled the world in winter. When winter came, disembodied spirits that had died throughout the preceding year would come back with Lord of Death because they needed to search living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be the spirits only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed on October 31 all laws of space and time were suspended to allow the spirits world to intermingle with the living.

Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. On the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in ghoulish costumes and noisily parade around the neighborhood being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. The thrust of the practices also changed over time to become more ritualized. As belief in spirit possession waned, the practice of dressing up like hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches took on a more ceremonial role.

When Irish immigrants fleed their country due to the potato famine and immgrated to America in the 1840's, they brought the Halloween costume into American culture. Nowadays children in America have a lot of fun dressing up in costumes and going "Trick or Treating." Halloween did not grow out of evil practices,it grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year. Many churches now have Halloween parties or pumpkin carving events for the kids. After all, the day itself is only as evil as one cares to make it.
